Commentators have long pointed out that Moses represented the Sinai Covenant/Law (as well as the Exodus) and that Elijah represented the prophetic voice of the Old Testament as well as Gods covenant faithfulness in sending servants to continue speaking to and ministering to even a wayward Israel. Lukes account is closely related to the First Lesson, in which Moses, after being in the presence of God to receive the Ten Commandments, comes down from Mount Sinai, and the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God (Exodus 34:29). The family lineage depends on this child. Peter, James, and Johnpartners before in secular business; now sole witnesses of the resurrection of Jairus' daughter (Mr 5:37), the transfiguration, and the agony in the garden (Mr 14:33). It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen (Exodus 33:21-23). We know from Matthews and Marks Gospels Jesus told them to tell no one until after the resurrection. They confirm that this is the will of God for him. We do not want to meet him still in our sinful state. The disciples would have heard of them and read about them from the Scriptures. More importantly, it marked a renewal of Gods covenant with Israel. If there was any question as to who Jesus was, there was no mystery about it now: He is the Christ, the only begotten son of God. Sometimes he says something beautiful, like earlier in Chapter 9 when he confesses that Jesus is the Christ. In that instance, they will actually fall asleep. Indeed, by their very demeanor and words, they are actually tugging Jesus another direction! Moreover, the disciples of Jesus are to listen to him. Its easy to find a time-lapse video of this strange looking caterpillar forming a chrysalis, and then a couple weeks later opening up to display this butterfly. Only 3 disciples went with him.
